Singer-songwriter Matéo has officially signed with Korean entertainment label Abyss Company, marking a significant expansion for the label in the Philippines and a new chapter for Filipino music on the global stage. The announcement was made at a press launch for Matéo’s fourth single, held on July 16, 2025 at Burnt Edges by Shrimp Bucket Three Central Mall.

Abyss Company, known for its artist-first philosophy and a global roster including SUNMI, Sandara Park, and MeloMance, is broadening its reach into the Philippines with the goal of cultivating a new generation of Asian talent for the international stage. This strategic move reflects Abyss Company’s commitment to supporting artists’ creative independence and fostering longevity in the music industry.

Matéo’s Debut Single with Abyss: “Bato sa Buhangin” Revival

Matéo’s first official single as an Abyss Company artist is a remake of the 1976 Cinderella classic, “Bato sa Buhangin”. The song, which Matéo calls his favorite OPM (Original Pilipino Music) song, will be released on all mainstream music platforms on July 25, 2025. Matéo hopes his rendition will introduce this timeless message of “sure, mabagal, and lasting love” to younger generations. I spoke to Mateo January of this year, as he just released his second single “Pinipili” as an independent artist.

A Partnership Built on Shared Vision

Matéo expressed his happiness in choosing Abyss Company over other interested labels, citing the alignment with his aspirations and the support offered by Timothy Kim (Chief Operating Officer of Abyss Company) and Aldrin Cerrado (Country Head for the Philippines). “I hold Tim (Kim) and Sir Aldrin (Cerrado) in high regard for providing me the chance to enhance my music while remaining true to its core,” Matéo stated. He also anticipates connecting with a broader audience and improving his sound production through this collaboration.

Aldrin Cerrado, former COO of ABS-CBN Global LTD., discovered Matéo’s music on TikTok and was immediately drawn to his “modern Kundiman sound” and “modern folk type songs”. He shared Matéo’s music with Timothy Kim, leading to the signing. Kim emphasized Abyss’ approach: “Our approach has always been to find artists who are already grounded in who they are, and then help elevate that… We’re not here to reshape their artistry—we’re here to support it with care and expertise”.

Abyss Company’s Global Expertise for Filipino Artists

Timothy Kim explained that Abyss Company plans to adapt its successful K-Pop model for Filipino artists by utilizing its global A&R, marketing, and management teams. Having managed K-Pop artists for seven years, Abyss has developed an efficient system that they aim to replicate for international artists like Matéo, with the goal of increasing global awareness and audiences. This strategic move underscores Abyss Company’s dedication to nurturing diverse talent and solidifying its presence in the global music industry, starting with promising artists like Matéo in the Philippines.
