Director Richard Somes is an epitome of a gentle giant. At first, you’d think that he’s very intimidating because of his built, inks, and his rockstar persona but really, he’s kind and very accommodating—typical traits of an Ilonggo. Direk Richard was born in Negros Occidental and it’s very prominent in his accent. Once an aspiring seaman, everything changed when he had his first gig in a movie set. He began his journey in the chaotic but exciting world of local showbiz as a propsman in Scorpio Nights 2, a film directed by Erik Matti, and from there, Direk Richard’s plans to set sail was placed in an indefinite halt.
He’s known for directing such movies as Ishmael, Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang, and Supremo but his movie Yanggaw was the one that really made a mark in the local movie industry. Yanggaw is an Ilonggo horror flick written and directed by Direk Richard that starred Ronnie Lazaro, Joel Torre, Tetchie Agbayani, Gio Respall, Aleera Montalla, and Erik Matti. Direk Richard has also directed several TV series like Imortal, Bridges of Love, Maria la del Barrio, and The Story of Us. He just got back from New York to represent the first public screening of his action-packed movie We Will Not Die Tonight at the New York Asian Festival. The movie boasts of an all-star cast featuring Erich Gonzales, Alex Medina, Max Eigenmann, Thou Reyes, Paolo Paraiso, Sarah Abad, and more.
Direk Richard has a bunch of projects lined up and he’s definitely up for the challenge, luckily enough, I got a chance to catch the busy director for a quick tambay while drinking buko juice. Watch my interview with Direk Richard and find out how he’d survive a zombie apocalypse and his all-time favorite music duo.
